Louis J. Bishop

Louis J. Bishop, 81, of Sumner and formerly of Denver, died Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Congregation Church in Tripoli, Iowa with Rev. John E. Block officiating. Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner will provide military rites. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver and for one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be made in his name to Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver are assisting Lou’s family.

Louis Joseph Bishop, son of Rexford Thorncliffe and Mabel Florence Douchette Bishop, was born April 9, 1932, in New London Connecticut. Lou graduated from high school in Connecticut and attended college for three years. He served with the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1951, during the Korean War. In August of 1983, he was united in marriage with Joan K. Becker. He was employed building roads and bridges by various heavy construction companies over the years. He and his wife were also resident managers at Fullerton Funeral Home in Rockwell for many years. A resident of Sumner since December of 2010, he was a member of Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner.

In addition to his wife, Joan of Sumner, he is survived by two sons, Kent Dobbs of Denver, Colorado and Steve (Tonia) Dobbs of Waterloo; one daughter, Diana (Brad Nation) Meyerhoff of Dunkerton; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his best friend, “Joe B”.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.

Joan and family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I worked with Lou at the YMCA for a few years and we became very dear friends. Birthdays and Holidays always had a phone conversation and a good story. He loved his Red Sox and Cardinals and I my Twins and Yankees.
